What is insurance excess in car rental? When you rent a car with us, standard insurance is included, but you’re still responsible for up to $3,000-$4,500 if the car is damaged or stolen — this is called the insurance excess. So, if something happens to the car, you could be charged up to $3,000-$4,500. To lower this, you can choose to add extra insurance that reduces the excess. We always recommend checking the terms and taking photos of the vehicle before and after your rental for peace of mind.
